Lead Up To The War

World War 2 lasted from 1939 to 1945, there were many events that lead to the start of the war such as:

  • France and Britain defeat Germany in World War 1 leaving the country bankrupt. Many Germans become angry with France and Britain blaming them for their troubles.
  • Adolf Hitler (leader of the Nazis) comes to power in 1933 he promises to make Germany powerful again while also making France and Britain suffer.

  • In 1936 Nazi Germany makes a deal with the leader of Italy (Mussolini), each country will defend each other if attacked.
  • Also in 1936 Hitler makes a deal with Japan. The deal with Japan tries to stop Russia getting any more powerful.
  • In 1938 the Nazis take over Austria. This move causes panic in France and Britain leaving them to warn Hitler that he is not to invade any more countries.

  • Nazi Germany invades Poland in September 1939. Neville Chamberlain (Prime Minister of Britain) declares war on Germany. World War 2 begins.
