Major Battles

Battle Of Britain

The Battle Of Britain lasted from July 10th 1940 to October 31st 1940. Germany had conquered most of Europe and the only major country left was Britain. The Nazis decided to attack Britain by air which meant they had to fight Britain's RAF (Royal Air Force). Britain had a big advantage because they had a new invention called
radar so they would know when the Germans were coming. When the Germans attacked they realised Britain had a strong air force and the Nazis wouldn't be able to beat them so Hitler switched plans to bombing big cities like London. But when the Nazis came out to bomb London Britain's RAF would just come out and fight the Nazis.

Pearl Harbour

Pearl Harbour is located in the Hawaiian Islands and was the major U.S naval base from where the US controlled the Pacific. On December 7th the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour to take control of the Pacific Ocean. They sent hundreds of bombers to Pearl Harbour killing thousands of people. At the same time Germany declared war on the US. This attack led to the USA entering the war, nearly two years after it had started in Europe.
Luckily for the US there were no aircraft carries in Pearl Harbour at the time as they were out at sea training. Watch the video below.

Battle of Stalingrad

The Battle of Stalingrad started in late 1942 and ended in early 1943. Stalingrad got its name from Joseph Stalin (leader of Russia). The battle started when the Nazis bombed the Volga river in Stalingrad. They attacked by air turning Stalingrad into rubble then entering Stalingrad with their guns and tanks. Both countries had over a milllion soldiers at the battle. There were over 1,000 planes and thousands of tanks. As winter set in the Germans got trapped inside Stalingrad and starved. Hitler promoted General Friedrich Paulus to Field Marshall and told him not to surrender to the Russians but he did and so he was then demoted. The Germans lost about 750,000 soldiers and the Russians lost 500,000 soldiers and the Russians captured around 90,000 Germans. Germany lost so many soldiers that they never quite recovered.

The Fall of Berlin

The Battle of Berlin ran from the 16th of April to May 2nd 1945. The Battle of Berlin was fought by the Russians and the Germans. Russia had more soldiers than Germany. The Russians had over 2,500,000 soldiers and the Germans had only 1 million soldiers. The Battle of Berlin started when the Russians bombed the Oder river near Berlin. When they killed all the soldiers outside Berlin they started to push into Berlin. Bombers were all around Berlin and Hitler knew he was about to be beaten by the Russians. He tried to call for backup but none came. Hitler knew he was beaten so he killed himself his wife and then his dog. Then the German Generals surrendered to the Russians and the war was over in Europe. Around 81,000 Russians died and around 280,000 were wounded.  Around 90,000 Germans died and around 222,000 were wounded.

The video below shows Berlin just one month after the city was captured by the Allies..

The Battle of Midway

The battle of Midway was one of the most important battles of World War 2. It took place between June 4th and June 7th 1942. Midway is an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean half way between Asia and North America. The Japanese planned to sneak up on the US forces. However because of the code breakers the Americans knew the Japanese plans and set a trap for the Japanese. The Japanese lost four aircraft carriers loads of ships 248 aircraft and 3,000 soldiers. It was the first major victory for the allies.

Weapons

The Spitfire

The Spitfire was a famous British fighter plane. The first flight of the Spitfire was on March 5th 1936. It entered the Royal Air Force in 1938 and it was a key part of the RAF until 1955. In the time when the Spitfire was in the RAF about 20,000 Spitfires were made. The Spitfire was one of Britain's 3 types of fighter plane. After the War the Spitfire planes were used as planes to train people and the Spitfire was coloured pink. There are only 50 Spitfires flying today.

The U-boat

The U-boat was a German submarine first made in 1917. It could really fight any ships sinking them with its torpedos. It would blow up a ship from underneath the water. Ships cold not see the U-boats comming and so had no warning. The U-boat was so dangerous it almost made Britain surrender in World War 2. The U in a U-boat means undersea so it was called The Undersea Boat.

The V2

After losing the Battle of Britain Germany decided to build deadlier weapons to defeat Britain. The V2 rocket was the most dangerous of these new weapons. It could travel faster than the speed of sound and towards the end of the war was responsible for thousands of deaths in London. Luckily it came too late for Germany to win the war.
After the war many of the scientists who had helped build the V2 went to Russia and USA and helped make their space programmes better. In USA these scientists went on to build the Saturn V which helped people to get to the moon.

The Atomic Bomb

On the 6th of August 1945 two American bombers arrived over Japan they were about to drop the first Atomic bomb over Japan. When the bomb got set off first all you could see was smoke then there was a massive explosion the explosion killed around 200,000 people. Japan surrendered in case any more Atomic bombs came and that was the end of World War 2.
